Block Launches New Long-Life Mining Rig and Free Software, Marking a New Era in Bitcoin Mining
The continuous challenge of efficiency and technological development has been a characteristic of Bitcoin mining. Jack Dorsey‘s Block (formerly Square) has unveiled what could be the biggest advancement in Bitcoin mining since its inception: a new life-long mining rig and a free software.
Block Takes Big Leap in Bitcoin Mining
On Thursday, at Core Scientific’s facility in Dalton, GA, Block announced the first-of-its-kind modular BTC mining system, Proto Rig, and a free and open-source fleet management software platform called Proto Fleet.
The current industry standard for Bitcoin mining, Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) rigs, lasts anywhere between three to five years. Many of the Bitcoin mining rigs we have today are single-use machines. They are highly prone to breakdowns, are costly, time-consuming to repair, and are very hard to upgrade. They result in power wastage and a short life span.
However, the Proto Rig introduced by Block have been built to solve these problems. They can last a decade or more, marking a major shift in Bitcoin mining. Unlike traditional mining rigs that require you to scrap entire units when they become obsolete, miners can swap out individual hashboards on the Proto rig as technology improves.
By allowing upgrades, Proto Rigs can potentially reduce the costs of upgrades per cycle by as much as 15-20%. Proto rigs, in addition, provide tool-free repair, meaning that a miner can fix his/her machine within seconds instead of hours or even days, vastly minimizing a loss of time.
Compared to the older hardware options on the market, Proto Rig offers 1.5 as much power per foot of rack space. Proto Rig was constructed to be compatible with modern and legacy infrastructure, to enable easy integration without expensive retrofits.
According to Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block, mining hardware has not evolved much over the past several years, and the company planned to alter the situation by creating its own mining system. Block is also trying to improve decentralization of the mining equipment market with its new launch.
A Huge Leap in Mining Software
The Proto Fleet is an open source mining software designed to provide a full-featured, open-source fleet management program. The software can consolidate power scaling, monitor rigs, make diagnostics, and maintain tools, all in a single intuitive platform.
The fact that Proto Fleet will be offered free of charge to any user will enable Block to even out the playing field to miners of all sizes by providing them with access to high quality management tools and avoiding lock-ins on their proprietary platform. This is in line with the firm’s move towards decentralizing Bitcoin mining by the company.
According to Templeton, Proto Fleet is Block’s attempt at making mining hardware and software that are at a comparable level of technological advancements. According to him, the software can be described as something new that increases efficiency in operations rather than needlessly complicating things.
How This Launch Potentially Changes the Bitcoin Mining Market
By ensuring that the repairability, power efficiency, and backwards compatibility of Proto Rigs, together with the streamlined, open-source software of the Proto Fleet, Block could improve the decentralization of the mining space by making the vital Bitcoin process of mining accessible to all.
