CZ’s Attorney Calls Pardon for Payment Allegations False
Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao’s lawyer says reports claiming he was pardoned for payment-related charges are false.
Lawyer Teresa Goody Guillen pointed out that the allegations surrounding his pardon are based on false claims.
On the podcast, Guillen noted that CZ was pardoned because it was fair. She also said he was unfairly blamed in the fight against crypto, while other finance executives facing the same legal issues didn’t go to jail.
According to Guillen, CZ was targeted as part of a “war on crypto” after the FTX collapse. She believes authorities needed someone to prosecute, and unfortunately, it ended up being CZ and Binance.
Lawmakers Slam CZ’s Pardon, Cite Corruption and Threat to Justice
Senator Elizabeth Warren opposed CZ’s pardon, saying his pardon and Binance’s financial ties to Trump’s family raise serious questions about fairness in the justice system.
Warren noted that CZ had pleaded guilty to a money laundering charge before financing Trump’s stablecoin, which she believes he used as a basis to request a pardon.
Several Democratic Senators, including Bernie Sanders, Chris Van Hollen, Jack Reed, and Mazie Hirono, sent a letter to the Attorney General asking how CZ’s pardon might affect future cases against white-collar criminals.
According to them, the pardon sends a message that crypto executives and other white-collar criminals can get away with crimes as long as they enrich President Donald Trump.
Representative Maxine Waters said the pardon was shocking but not surprising. She accused Trump of favoring crypto criminals who benefited him while Americans struggled with a higher cost of living during the government shutdown.
In response to these growing criticisms, Representative Ro Khanna announced plans to introduce a law that would prevent elected officials from owning or launching cryptocurrencies.
