Ukrainian Student Burned Alive In Austria After Attackers Extract Crypto Wallet Password
Ukrainian student Danylo K., 21 and the son of Kharkiv’s deputy mayor, was found dead in Vienna after attackers kidnapped, tortured, and burned him alive in pursuit of his crypto wallet password.
According to local reports, two suspects, a fellow student aged 19 and a 45 year-old Ukrainian national, had fled to their home country with large amounts of cash. They were arrested days later by Ukrainian authorities.
The victim’s family had reported him missing on Nov. 25 after losing contact with him and discovering that his crypto wallets had been drained.
Violence Against Victim Took Place Over Several Hours
The victim’s body was discovered on Nov. 26 in his father’s burned-out Mercedes S 350D on Marlen-Haushofer-Weg in Vienna’s Donaustadt district. Fire alarms had alerted residents of the blaze at approximately 12:30 a.m.
Authorities suspect that the attack started hours earlier in the underground parking garage of the Sofitel “SO/Vienna” hotel on Praterstraße, where they believe the 19-year-old suspect had ambushed the fellow student after a loud confrontation.
After hearing the altercation, a hotel guest had alerted reception, who then notified the police. A passerby had also later noticed a large pool of blood in the stairwell leading to the parking area.
Investigators believe that the victim was severely beaten in the garage before he was forced into his father’s vehicle.
After forcing the student into the Mercedes, the suspects drove him to the Donaustadt location. During this drive, the 21-year-old was subjected to extended torture as the assailants tried to extract his crypto wallet password from him.
During the assault, the victim’s teeth were knocked out. The violence had escalated in the following hours as well.
Once the attackers got the victim’s password, they doused him with gasoline and set him ablaze while he was crouched in the back seat. He had head injuries and burns that covered 80% of his body, authorities said.
Suspects Were Caught In Ukraine After International Manhunt
Vienna police were able to identify the two suspects through surveillance footage that was captured at the hotel’s garage and the gas station where they had purchased the gasoline for the attack.

After crossing into Ukraine at precisely 9:07 a.m. the morning after the murder, an international manhunt for the two was triggered.
Authorities found the two assailants on Nov. 29 with large amounts of US dollar bills and arrested them. The cash is believed to have come from the stolen crypto, which the two suspects had quickly sold after extracting the wallet password from the victim.
The authorities did not disclose the amount of crypto that was stolen.
The case has since been transferred from Austrian officials to the Ukrainian Jurisdiction, since extradition is not possible under existing agreements between the two countries.
Crypto Crimes On The Rise
The incident in Vienna is the latest in a growing trend of physical attacks on crypto investors after prices surged in recent years.
Security researcher Jameson Lopp shared recent findings that showed there have been more than 60 documented physical attacks on crypto holders worldwide this year. That’s a 169% surge since February and a 33% increase compared to 2024’s total figure.
France currently leads the world in global incidents, with 14 confirmed cases reported so far. There have also been violent robberies reported in Canada, the US, and the UK.
