Cardano Joins Coinbase in x402 Integration, Hoskinson Calls It a Big Deal for the Network
Cardano has joined a growing list of blockchains integrating artificial intelligence. Cardano has announced that it has begun the process of integrating x402, a payment standard designed to enable AI agents to complete transactions without human intervention.
When completed, x402, designed by Coinbase, will allow AI agents to use Cardano’s ADA coin and USDM stablecoin to make on-chain payments. Reacting to the integration, Cardano’s founder, Charles Hoskinson, has said that this is “very big” for the network.
Cardano Begins Process of Integrating x402
In a post on X, Patrick Tobler, the co-founder of Masumi Network, announced that they were implementing x402 support for Masumi and Cardano. Masumi is a DeFi protocol building an “AI agent economy” on the Cardano network.
Tobler shared a proof-of-concept demo showing how the x402 can trigger automated on-chain actions like minting tokens via a simple web payment flow. Once a visitor clicks the demo page, they cause a 402: payment required response.
Users may then attach their wallets, build the payment, and once it is confirmed on-chain, access the resources that were locked previously, in this instance, minting memecoins. Tobler said the team is now working on creating the x402 standard for Cardano and Masumi to integrate it directly with Masumi smart contracts.
Taking this approach will move Cardano beyond address-to-address transfers to building a more powerful and flexible payment infrastructure. The integration of x402 has caught the attention of Charles Hoskinson, who responded with “This is very big for Cardano.”
The project was first built by Coinbase and implemented in the Agent-Payment Protocol (AP2) of Google to allow smooth, verifiable payments between AI agents and services to automate on-chain transactions in real-time.
Benefits of the x402 Integration for Cardano
The integration of the x402 protocol into Cardano and Masumi will bring some important changes. Firstly, x402 the integration will allow for native, automated, and verifiable payments between AI agents and services on the Cardano blockchain.
Masumi, in its turn, offers extra security, refund policies, identity, and decision-making logs. Conversely, x402 provides a standardization of the interface of the pay-to-access flow using the universal web protocol. x402 is built based on the HTTP 402 status code of Payment required.
It also enables the user to pay for resources through API calls without registration, OAuth, or complicated authentication procedures. In the case of Cardano, it would imply that the blockchain would become a financial foundation of the AI agent economy and would enable trustless, large-scale microtransactions.
According to reports, the x402 protocol has already processed more than 500,000 transactions within a week, with tech giants like Google, AWS, and Visa working on adopting the technology. This is why the arrival of x402 on Cardano could be a major catalyst for the expansion of its ecosystem.
When Will x402 Become Available on Cardano?
The x402 protocol is expected to be included in the next major Cardano upgrade, the Ouroboros Leios. This upgrade, which focuses on boosting throughput, is expected to be deployed by early 2026. This integration will be a huge step in moving the Cardano network into potentially becoming the financial backbone of the AI agent economy.
