Coinbase Shares 2026 Outlook, Highlights Three Areas That Will Dominate the Crypto Market

Crypto exchange giant Coinbase has shared three key areas that it expects to dominate the crypto market in 2026. Coinbase notes that the crypto market is entering a phase where activity concentration matters more than narrative momentum.

As a result, some familiar crypto models like four-year bull cycles, token launches, and other catalysts will lose relevance because of rising institutional flows. With more institutional participation anticipated, the report from Coinbase Institutional sees 2026 as a test of whether crypto markets can scale under more regulated conditions.

Written by David Duong, Coinbase’s global head of research and Colin Basco, a research associate, the report highlights the following three core areas that could dominate the market in 2026.

  1. Perpetual Futures Could Anchor Price Discovery

Coinbase sees perpetual futures as one of the core activities of the crypto market and reports that the greatest part of the trading takes place in derivatives across key trading platforms. The firm says this has changed the dynamics of price formation to positioning, funding rates, and liquidity conditions, as opposed to momentum solely on the retail basis.

According to the report, the leverage was significantly decreased after liquidation events in late 2025, especially in derivatives markets. Coinbase describes that decline as a structural reset and not a retreat, as the speculative excess was culled and those who were involved in perpetual futures were not deterred.

As Duong and Basco put it, markets that are better absorbing shocks are coming into existence, despite the dominance of the derivatives in liquidity, as the margin practices and risk controls become tighter.

  1. Evolution of Prediction Markets

According to Coinbase, prediction markets are shifting from experiment-based products to more permanent financial infrastructure. The company cites increasingly large notional volumes and greater liquidity as evidence that these markets are being more and more relied upon to make information discoveries and transfer risks.

Coinbase also reports that fragmentation between prediction platforms is stimulating the need to aggregate and make things more efficient. As per the report, this dynamic is drawing increased players who are more sophisticated and have wider use than the crypto-native traders, especially when the regulation becomes clearer in some jurisdictions.

  1. Stablecoins and Payments To Lead Real-world Activity

The last growth pillar in 2026, as emphasized by Coinbase, is the focus on stablecoins and payments, which the company characterizes as the most consistent point of crypto usage in the real world.

According to Duong and Basco, transaction volumes in stablecoins keep rising due to settlement, cross-border remittances, and liquidity opportunities, but not speculative trading. According to Coinbase, payment activity is getting more and more interconnected with other ecosystem components, such as automated trading strategies and new AI-based applications.

Instead of considering artificial intelligence as a competitive force, the company claims that the advancements strengthen blockchain-powered payments as the infrastructure of the digital marketplace.

In Summary

With the evolution of crypto regulation, 2026 is the year during which the crypto market is likely to mature further. Consequently, Coinbase believes 2026 will be a test of how the three markets it has emphasized are able to continue scaling and handle risk in a stricter regulatory environment.

In the event that these markets are able to expand in 2026, the company is confident that it can influence the future of crypto long after the next price cycle passes.
