Roblox, which boasts a collection of more than 50 million games, will now accept $XRP as a payment option, as announced today.
Payments in $XRP will be processed by BitPay, an app that facilitates crypto payments. This has been made possible via Xsolla’s integration of the cryptocurrency in its partnership with BitPay.
Xsolla is a global video game commerce company headquartered in the US. It is known for managing the in-game payments in online games like Roblox and Smite.
Debuted in 2006, Roblox has now grown into a game with 66.1 million daily active users and over 214 million monthly active users. It can be played on all mainstream platforms, such as Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
As per its first quarter 2023 financial and operational results, Roblox users spent around $773million on in-game purchases during that period.
Xsolla, on the other hand, has been integrating crypto into its payment system since 2014. It also ventured into the NFT bandwagon when it partnered with automated crypto management platform Coinchange Financials Inc. and live-streaming social Web3 platform, TradeZing, in August 2022. The tie-up was aimed at developing an exclusive NFT Landscape Report.
The report outlined how the non-fungible token sector evolved from digital collectibles to practical utilities and their financialisation. It also focused on how monetisation of NFTs allows for the same exchanges previously transacted for monetary gains. Marking Xsolla’s entry into the fintech industry in furthering the adoption of NFT for game objects.
Its president, Chris Hewish, was quoted saying: “We aim to accelerate content engagement and ownership from the developer to the players – without requiring knowledge of blockchain technology from either group. This project supports our mission to solve the inherent complexities of video game global distribution, marketing, and monetisation, so our partners can grow their audience, overall engagement, and revenue.”
This year, Xsolla also joined hands with Crypto.com to integrate the latter’s checkout solution into Xsolla’s Pay Station platform. This enabled game developers and players to accept cryptocurrency payments and streamline transactions in a user-friendly and secure manner for a universally enhanced experience.
Xsolla and BitPay share a history that goes back to 2014 when they first joined hands to embrace Bitcoin for in-game payments. Last month, when BitPay rolled out PayPal USD ($PYUSD) payments for its merchants and consumers, Xsolla was one of the first merchants to accept the stablecoin. The integration enabled its gaming customers to buy any merchandise online using the PayPal stablecoin.
