Coca-Cola unveils ‘Masterpiece’ NFT collection on Base

Coca-Cola yesterday launched its ‘Masterpiece’ NFT collection on Base – Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network – featuring some of the world’s most famous artworks.

Coinbase announced the set as part of its ongoing ‘Onchain Summer’ initiative that began on 9 August to mark the Base mainnet launch.

The collection combines iconic artworks as well as new works from emerging talents, all interspersed with the famous cola bottle.

Well-known artworks include ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch and ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ by Johannes Vermeer.

Eight versions of the NFTs are priced from 0.0011 ETH to 0.014 ETH, with some going for less than the mint price on OpenSea. They are minted through the mint.fun platform, with an estimated 50,000 thought to be clocked so far.

“Each of these creations now takes on a new dimension as they become onchain collectibles, accessible to art enthusiasts participating in Onchain Summer,” Coinbase said.

“‘Masterpiece’ by Coca-Cola® is not just an art collection, but an embodiment of the dynamic convergence between art, technology, and human connection — and by taking it onchain, Coca-Cola® is leading the way for other brands and industries to explore innovative ways of engaging with our new digital age. This collection transcends the physical limitations of a traditional art gallery, expanding its reach and impact across the globe,” it added.

“I’m proud to be a part of Masterpiece,” according to Egyptian visual artist Fatma Ramada, “because my work will be shown alongside a diverse group of artists from different countries.”

Coca-Cola has previously launched NFTs, auctioning four collectibles in July 2021 and raising more than $575k for charity. To celebrate Pride Month last year, the company also launched 136 NFTs.

It was reported last week that Base’s daily active users reached 100,000 for the first time. According to Coinbase’s Jesse Pollak: “Base was created with a clear vision: bring the next million builders and billion users onchain. This serves to accelerate a global, decentralized financial system that will increase economic freedom around the world.”
